How To Actually Practice Feeling Your Emotions

How To Actually Practice Feeling Your Emotions

You might have heard that it’s important to feel your emotions and that you shouldn’t stuff them down. That doing so can contribute to using food as a coping mechanism (a.k.a. Binge eating).  I say this all the time and it’s all good and dandy in theory, but maybe you’ve realized you have no clue how to actually feel your emotions or where to start. My intention with this post is to give you some guidance in where to start and take some of the pressure off. I mean, you’ve likely been stuffing your emotions down for years, so you’re not going to immediately be able to feel them overnight. Read More

Why I Think You Should Feed Your Inner Child Ice Cream

Why I Think You Should Feed Your Inner Child Ice Cream

I talk a lot about intuitive eating and listening to our bodies when it comes to food.  As you know I am not big on labelling the way we eat or creating rules and restrictions around our diets.  I have addressed the fact that when we release control it doesn’t mean we will eat all the things, all the time.  When we truly listen to our body and not our mind, we will more often than not reach for whole foods.  Our bodies want to be healthy and feel good, but sometimes we get a craving for something like ice cream of fries, which I think we should feed our inner child. The Most Important Tool You Have Is Your Breath

The Most Important Tool You Have Is Your Breath

One of my many favourite topics in yoga teacher training was on the breath.  Our breath is the gateway to our parasympathetic nervous system, which can literally calm the stress response system.  The other benefit is that it takes mindfulness to focus on our breath so will naturally increase our awareness.  Both of these reasons are incredibly helpful when we are feeling disconnected and ready to reach for food. How Lack Of Presence In Your Life Can Manifest As Binge Eating

How Lack Of Presence In Your Life Can Manifest As Binge Eating

It’s common to think that you just don’t have willpower around food.  It’s common to label some foods as good and others as bad.  It’s common to try to think your way out of binge eating and compulsive overeating with more rules, restrictions and plans.  Just because something is common, doesn’t mean it’s normal or healthy.  When you stop looking for that external fix and start looking under the food and doing the internal work you discover many things.  A recent discovery I had is that binge eating was a symptom of not taking up space in other areas of my life.  Binge eating manifested as a way to have presence, as a way to be seen. 5 Ways Healing Your Relationship With Food Can Improve Your Relationship With People

By now I’m sure you understand that food isn’t your problem and that the root cause of binge eating runs much deeper. When you do the inner healing work like looking at your belief systems that are creating distorted thoughts that keep triggering you, inner child work, mindfulness to increase your awareness, and practices to get you back in touch with trusting your body and intuition, you can’t not look at all the other areas of your life. Relationships are a big area of our lives and are definitely affected by our internal environment. Read More

Lavender White Hot Chocolate

Lavender White Hot Chocolate

I have a thing for using lavender in my food, much to the dismay of my boyfriend.  Some people just don’t like Lavender but I love it!  I used both lavender essential oil and dried lavender in this Lavender White Hot Chocolate.  Lavender is a calming and relaxing herb, which is especially great this time of year. Why Empowered Vitality?

Why Empowered Vitality?

Why Empowered Vitality? I had someone ask me once what my business name means and then say he didn’t like it. This made me sit down and think about why I chose this name and even considered changing it, because it’s not immediately clear what I do.  I’ve decided to keep it and I’ll explain more about what it means to me and how I got to the point of naming a business in the first place! Why The Comment, “You Look Skinny” Is No Longer A Compliment To Me

Why The Comment, You Look Skinny Is No Longer A Compliment To Me

It used to make me feel so good about myself when people told me I was thin or looked skinny. It boosted my self-esteem when people praised me on my physique and fitness level. During that time I based my worth on what my body looked like, the number on the scale and how “fit” I was. Read More

Why AffirmationsDon't Work & What To Do Instead

I’m a big believer in the law of attraction and manifesting what we want in our lives.  I have seen in my own life how harnessing my thoughts and changing my mindset can create real change.  Affirmations are one way we’re often told will help us get there but they don’t always work.  I share why in my video below, Why Affirmations Don’t Work & What To Do Instead.
