Chocolate Cherry Smoothie
The Chocolate Cherry Smoothie is a classic and one I turn to often for a snack or lighter breakfast. I’m all about making food taste good but also convenient and quick to prepare. This Chocolate Cherry Smoothie fits the bill!
I like switching my protein powder up from whey to hemp to pea protein and mixtures, like Vega. I avoid soy protein completely as it’s both a goitrogen and phytoestrogen.
Goitrogen’s affect your thyroid negatively, as they prevent the uptake of iodine in your thyroid. Phytoestrogens act like estrogen in your body, in that they latch onto your receptors for estrogen, but they don’t perform quite like estrogen. This means they don’t really do the job, estrogen in your body is supposed to, but can also cause estrogen dominance symptoms and issues.
Read more about soy and why its best to avoid over at Chris Kresser’s blog. Another downfall about soy is that it’s generally genetically modified if it’s not organic. I think small amounts of fermented soy in the diet, is fine but please stop getting your latte with soy milk! Better yet try my Pumpkin Spice Latte instead.
I used Manitoba Hemp Harvest Hemp Pro 70 protein powder for this recipe. Hemp protein has come a long way, as it used to be gritty and reminiscent of dirt. This protein powder is silky smooth and you can’t taste it! I’ve been buying it lately, as I discovered Costco carries it and it’s cheap! I’m all about making eating well affortable too;)
You can get a big bag of organic frozen cherries from Costco too! Seriously I have no stocks in Costco and appreciate being able to shop local as well. But I too need to budget my groceries, although I often go over the budget. Anyways, this smoothie is quick to whip up and contains protein, healthy fats from the coconut butter, carbohydrates from the cherries and I even snuck some veggies in, in the form of spinach. I’ve put shredded beets in this smoothie before as it works well and you can’t taste it much at all.
